Description
Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) contracted Chinook Multimedia to develop a two-year strategic plan for the development of online youth (k-grade 12) education resources and a fish species identification learning object as an initial exemplar resource.
To help to engage the target audience, the learning object is based on a game show metaphor. The Fish Quiz demonstrates our Flash skills and our ability to create an engaging interactive learning resource for a target age group. Our work included graphics, programming, collaboration with subject matter experts in the creation of text, and the development of the teacher notes.
SRD provided the 3D fish species illustrations and validated all content. Our thanks to all involved SRD staff for their expert analysis and feedback.
Challenges
Content validation involved numerous review stages, so we had to be able to modify content quickly without growing the budget. We planned for this eventuality from the commencement of the project.
SRD also wanted to encourage youth to play the quiz game more than once, but each instance of the game had to include questions from a number of specified categories. In response, we created a custom randomization script that always draws a total 10 questions from a pool of 47 possible questions with at least one question required from each of 9 categories.
