Chinwe Okelu, Ward 11 candidate for council in Edmonton's municipal election on October 18, 2010, wanted a website that encourages community involvement in his campaign. The design of Okelu's website reflects best practices and emerging trends found on leading Canadian and American political campaign websites, while reinforcing Okelu's community-based approach to politics. The Okelu website provides numerous opportunities for citizen involvement. They can express their views on news and blog stories, contact the candidate, share pages on their favourite social networks, or become more directly involved in Okelu's campaign by volunteering, providing endorsements, requesting lawn signs, or making contributions through PayPal.
Challenges
Political campaign websites have gone through dramatic changes in style in the last few years. They are now seen as communication portals in addition to their more traditional role as information portals. They leverage social networking, build online communities of supporters, take donations, promote events, and coordinate volunteer activities. They can also include geotargeting, which enables candidates to provide targeted messages about specific issues to website users based on their location. The Chinook Multimedia content management system is a cost-effective solution for political campaign websites that enables all of these solutions.
