Description
For this project, Chinook Multimedia provided research, simulation design, graphics, functional and instructional design, collaboration with a subject matter expert, editing, copyediting, development of all multimedia content, advanced Flash programming with XML backend, accessibility, and W3C and SCORM compliance.
The role-playing simulation design is based on constructivist theory. Hence, the simulation is data, action, and experiment driven. As in the real world, every user choice and action has a consequence. The simulation uses real world scenarios to model the consequences. Users can apply their knowledge (pre-existing and acquired within the simulation) to find solutions to realistic problems. Users will experience success or failure based on their choices.
Of note, the simulation accesses a research library containing more than 40,000 research document pages. The simulation storyboard text was expertly researched and written by Calgary historian Brad Rennie.
Challenges
The major challenge of creating a role playing simulation lies in constructing the storyboard. Each decision point results in new scenarios. The cumulative result can be hundreds or thousands of different pathways for the player. In this simulation, the user can play either of two characters, with each facing unique challenges and decision points.
